ALLDATA DIY is God (ok, a holy field office)
ALLDATADIY.COM - Do It Yourself Automotive Diagnostic & Repair Information
I got a subscription to AllData for my truck back in 1999, and it always comes through for me when the Hayes manual is vague and leaves a procedure out, or the pictures/diagrams are inaccurate. They also provide accurate Motorcraft parts numbers, which is truly a godsend/supreme being blessing when you have to battle parts people about what you're looking for, and what they want to pawn off on you.
I had a Napa guy try to sell me a drum brake hardware kit with a torn, grease parts package, missing springs and spring washers. Man, this is Napa? When I'd gone to Autozone, now the partner on the alldata-diy site, for the same rear drum brake hardware kit, I had to help the kid behind the counter identify the part I needed, reaching over the counter and jumping on the CRT he was using to find it. I didn't get angry with the kid, but when I told him what I needed, he tried to sell me calipers. Calipers? On a rear brake drum assembly?
I feel for the folks who don't second guess the parts houses. Even the Motorcraft dealers make mistakes some times, but I guess they're still not as bad as Cordova Auto Supply was. Man, how I miss Nu-Jet............

Did the Gods scare Angelo and Friends?
Natomas landowners call off arena deal - 2005-02-23 - Sacramento Business Journal
One wonders, with the unprecedented mini-tornados that touched down in North Natomas, and the subsequent announcement of the Arena deal going south, if Angelo and friends didn't get a little scared and interpret the weather as a "Sign from the Gods". If so, which God(s), and what will they sacrifice next to appease them? Somehow, I figure it will involve land in Rancho and our quality of life.
Natomas landowners call off arena deal
Mike McCarthy
Staff writer, Sacramento Business Journal
The North Natomas landowners planning to help fund a new arena for the Sacramento Kings basketball team in return for getting their land zoned for development have canceled their effort.

By Daniel McCarthy on Thu, 2005-02-10 00:00.
Can doing a LAMP installation really be so easy as to require only two steps?
XAMPP is a collection of free software for installing and using the Apache Web server. Basically, it is an Apache distribution that includes the Apache Web server, MySQL, PHP, Perl an FTP server and phpMyAdmin. XAMPP is available for Linux, Solaris and Windows. According to the Apache Friends Web site, "The philosophy behind XAMPP is to build an easy-to-install distribution for developers to get into the world of Apache."

Does Bush use the Internet?
I was thinking about how essential the Internet is for my personal finance decision-making: from buying tickets to various sporting events to buying auto insurance, balancing my checking account and paying bills, tracking my retirement investments, or trying to get to the bottom of a computer problem.
Bottom line, I don't know how I could make as timely and competent financial decisions w/o internet access as with internet access, and with that admission comes the frustrating fact that to use the Internet today, one has to take care in preventing spyware and adware from being installed on your system, given the volume of sensitive personal financial information we regularly share online.
And then the question struck me..........
after reading that Gator's CPO had been appointed to the Department of Homeland Security's Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee..
Does the President of the United States of America use the Internet?
How could anyone with so many important decisions to make resist the urge to verify for himself, even occasionally, what he's being told by his advisors, and if so, how in the heck did anyone from Gator get appointed to any position in the Dept. of Homeland Security with the prolific amount of negative publicity and discussions online about Gator?
So, does anyone know if President Bush uses the Internet and what he uses it for? And what does he do about spyware and pop-ups? Where's he browsing that's he's not reading about the uproar about spyware and adware?

Spyware maker iDownload threatens CastleCops
CastleCops responds to iDownload/iSearch
iDownload has sent CastleCops and Spyware Warrior a "Cease and Desist" letter concerning their listing of ISearch as spyware and discussion on the site about their product. (Slashdot plug) (Broadband Reports article)(blogcritics article)
I guess the truth hurts. CastleCops wrote back to inform them about our little spyware law here in CA. A CastleCops member has posted a petition for the public to sign against Idownload's scare tactics, "Response to iSearch/iDownload Cease & Desist Threats"
Can Google Ads be construed as "improperly disparaging the iDownload/iSearch brand"(google: isearch)?
I wonder if iDownload is going to take on Microsoft's SpyNet? Please Microsoft, jump in this fight! Support the community!

YUBA CITY - Gabrial Singh's on-again, off-again appointment to the Sutter County Planning Commission is on again.Singh and the four county supervisors who voted him off the planning panel two weeks ago agreed Tuesday to end a six-week flap over his opinions.
If Singh would apologize for remarks he made about the Board of Supervisors and County Administrator Larry Coombs during a heated political campaign last year, the supervisors would not overturn his second appointment to the commission.
So, before a packed audience, Singh said he was sorry for implying the Board of Supervisors, the county administrator and the sheriff were as corrupt and stupid as the characters portrayed on "The Dukes of Hazzard" TV show.

The house of many 'o produce deal over burgers
I'll remember this place to the day I die. When I worked for Lucky Produce as a kid, every Sunday we had to work, manditory, and at around 9am - 10am, the owner of Lucky Produce, Joe Mitchell would bring the entire shop crew cheese burgers from "The Market Club" (seen pictured)for our morning break "snack". He'd then sit and bs with us, follow up on repairs needed, remind us of the day's priorities, but mostly, just find out how we were doing and get us those burgers. When he couldn't come over, either because of business or because of his health, he'd send the burgers over with the designated trailer shuffler, a driver whose main job on Sundays was to bring back empty trailers from the 5th Street market in Sacramento, and return over the river with a trailer loaded with produce sitting in our West Sacramento fleet yard. We'd always converge on the guy like vultures. Those cheese burgers came rain or shine 52 weeks of the year, and they were GOOD.Posted by cystdog at 02:46 AM | TrackBack

Botched Home Invasion Leaves One Man Dead, One Wounded
Story last updated Friday, February 11, 2005 - 12:59 AM
VIDEO
I first heard about this as "Breaking News" on KFBK. Jay Alan began to describe the scene and scope of what had happened, stating that 2 schools had been locked down, and that the streets around the schools had been blocked off. NO NAMES were mentioned, not of the schools, nor of the streets.
They segwayed into the reporter on the scene, who apparently either had low cell phone batteries, or hit a bad cell because the she faded in and out, leaving dead air for us all to listen to, until they played recorded interviews.
Until they played those interviews, I thought I had something wrong with my car radio reception. The people who were interviewed talked about not being able to get into their neighborhoods, and one woman said her daughter could not come home from school because of the campus lockdown. Still, no names of streets or schools were heard. Allen finally broke in and said that the reporter on scene was in fact having communications problems, and that they would get back to the story later in the broadcast. That never happened.
I was in rush hour traffic, and was worried about my family, wondering where, when, how long this had gone on. I kept thinking about all the parents of children of those schools, how they might be reacting right now, hearing a special report like that, then having no information to go on. Which schools? Which neighborhoods.
Surely with a school lockdown situation of not just one, but two schools, would prompt the media, specifically KFBK, to make special reports and help alert the public and parents of this situation. Didn't happen. Kitty and Jay talked about the Land Park dummy crisis, while parents in traffic wondered what the hell was going on with their kids in possibly any of the schools in our city. (as reported at 4-6pm the media still said only two schools had been in lockdown since approximately 1:30pm-two hrs in total; the actual count was three schools;Williamson Elementary, Mitchell Middle School and Walnutwood Alternative High School, ironically the school closest to the shooting and not mentioned by the Sheriff's spokesman, the Bee or KCRA reports, only KXTV News 10)
Did the schools notify parents? Did the Sheriff's Department of City/City Police? The Sheriff's spokesman didn't even know 3 schools had been locked down, saying at least 4 times on three separate tv interviews and one radio interview that two, not three had been locked down, never mentioning the school closest, Walnutwood Alternative High School (an old elementary school), had been locked down as well.
When I got home, I immediately turned on the tv news, just before 5pm. KCRA led with another story, but their second story was the RC Shooting. Very little was discussed about the school lock down, or children, or parents' concerns and if they had been notified. The KXTV coverage was similar, as their story at 5pm was not the RC shooting. KOVR, which I don't watch, did a quick blurb, after doing an orgy of coverage on the huge public safety threat, the dangerous hanging dummy in Land Park.
KOVR and KFBK's obsession with that story confirmed for me that in the face of a public emergency in Rancho, they chose to stick to their political agenda, and not pull away for some "colored kids in Rancho Cambodia".
No station, radio or tv led with this story of 1300+ students (with an elementary school, a continuation school and a middle school) in lockdown from 1:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Not one. The Bee couldn't even report accurately that three schools had been locked down, excluding the one closest to the crime scene and in the center of an entire neighborhood blocked off by Police and the Sheriff's Department.
The combined approx attendance of the three schools is 1316 (OCT 2003)

If this had happened in a more affluent community like Elk Grove, Folsom, Roseville, an orgy of coverage would have ensued. Three public schools, in a lockdown, with an armed manhunt underway, and the Sacramento media cannot consider that a public emergency important enough as a lead story.
And where was the City and Sheriff's Department? No one could give a call and put the fire under the media, or did they? Did they want to minimize this in a damage control effort to preserve the "illusion" that Rancho Cordova is a safe community to buy homes in? Was selling the homes south of the freeway, and protecting marketability the overriding thought when deciding how to handle the public emergency notification and media relations?
How bad does a public emergency in a public school in Rancho Cordova have to be for Sacramento media to cover it as a top news story, as part of their duty to the communities they serve? If there's Columbine style shooting at a Rancho Cordova school, will this be the style of coverage provided? Does anyone even care?

My High School "Project" vehicle
This is Lucky 101, a 1952 Peterbilt restored by the now out-of-business Lucky Fruit and Produce Transport, owned by the legendary Joe Mitchell, who gave me my first job working with my Dad.Joe Mitchell commissioned the restoration of this former logging truck he bought in 1980-1981. It was completed in 1985. I was working at Lucky with my Dad when they began the project, then I moved to Yuba City for 2 years, got into trouble up there, and returned in 1983 to live with my Dad and work nights with him at Lucky, working part time there until July 1989, part time during school season Friday nights, Saturday and Sundays, full time in summers and vacations. It was a blast to have a whole shop and trucking facility to myself when I was only 14.
Detailing this classic truck for general upkeep, parades and shows, was part of my initial duties after returning. I also learned to drive trucks in this vehicle, and it was a sweet ride.
It suffered a sad death after rising for the ashes with Joe Mitchell's restoration. Joe Mitchell handed the company over to his son, Emery Mitchell to run in 1991-1992, and the truck was then used as a "yard goat", a truck used to shuffle trailers in the West Sacramento South River Rd. maintenance yard where I worked and the 5th Street Market in Sacramento, where the produce was stored and sold.
In 1992, Lucky was bought out by a former Lucky Produce salesman Miles Smith, who had started his own produce company, Cal Fresh. The last time I saw the Lucky 101 was in 2002, parked on the side of the now defuct Cal-Fresh's warehouse, also on 5th Street near Seavey Circle and my old Jones Way home.
It had been painted White and much of the chrome had been removed. The Chrome Steel wheels had also been replaced. The truck, as of 12/04 is gone, no longer at the old Cal Fresh warehouse, now called ProPacific Fresh.
I'm looking for Lucky 101, looking for who owns her now, for pictures of it's restoration from Joe Mitchell's family and former Lucky employees, all of which I've not talked to since probably 1994-95, some since 1989. It's a little historical quest I'm on. There are so many stories about that truck I want to tell, and only pictures can tell some of them. Who knows, maybe I'll try to buy the damn thing.

Will Sacbee Editorials on Walmart @Downtown be a Krispy Kreme replay?
You know, after reading the articles about the Krispy Kreme "crisis" as labeled by the Bee, it made me think about the future coverage of another big Borg corporate giant seeking a new home in the capitol city, Walmart.
I'm going to follow this closely. It's one thing to use your paper to go to bat for a donut shop near your home and the homes of your friends on the EGPD, but an entirely different game when you bring the WallyWorld Borg ship over Sacramento in geosynchronous orbit. I've worked for Sam's, and I know how they assimilate people and communities. The shell of a Sam's building I help set up in 1989 in Rancho stands as a warning to Sacramento of how WallBorg stands by communties and "misleads" their officials about it's future plans.
In my mind, the Bee supporting a Walmart in downtown is tantamount to a declaration of editorial war against the residents and small business owners of downtown and midtown. I just don't know if people there will make time to come up from between each others' legs, their bongs and lattes to do something about it.

Prologue: Krispy Kreme begins descent into oblivion
Krispy Kreme announces layoffs - 2005-02-08 - Sacramento Business Journal
Somehow, after seeing the drive through lines at the Concord Krispy Kreme while driving down 680 on Sundays nights back in 2003, and seeing the Arden Way lines, I knew this bubble had to burst. Heady coverage by the Bee of area store openings, a vitriolic claim by the Bee for it's Elk Grove readers god-given right to a Krispy Kreme...I just knew this ship was headed for trouble.
What will the Bee(EGPD/SCSD sockpuppets) have to say when in 2 years, the Krispy Kreme they so vigorously supported in disregard of the City's Planning Commission, closes shop. Will the Bee own up to being wrong headed about usurping a commission comprised of Elk Grove Citizens? Absolutely not. It's clear the bias they had, and the ability of Bee staff living in Elk Grove, and those having "relations" with EGPD/SCSD officers desiring a Krispy Kreme in their patrol area to drive Bee Coverage is obvious.
I mean come on, it's donuts. And they can't beat Howard's Donuts on Coloma @ Sunrise, in the Sacbee's "Rancho Cambodia".

Garbage! Don't leave it at the water!!
This (what's pictured) just flat out pist me off. I was ranting out loud, cussing up a storm. Since it was early, and raining, not a soul was out there, except the birds and animals.I just don't get it. The lake isn't so large that it can absorb all this crap and refuse, without it having a detrimental effect on the fish, birds and animals living there, not to mention the PEOPLE WHO EAT THE FISH.
Especially the fishing gear, I mean, if you're planning on eating what comes out of that lake, you would think the folks would try to keep it halfway clean. Someone, most likely the County Parks dept. and a few dedicated citizens who care about the lake, are cleaning up weekly. I've hit the Douglas Rd. north shore a few times because of all the trash from passing motorists, and man, is there a lot of trash that blows in there. I decided that I needed to wear waders and pants the next time I'm trudging around out there, as well as gas myself with Off bug spray.

Last time I was out there cleaning up, I came back bitten and scratched, so common sense takes over, always:
And last of all, check in with park about getting some trash bads and get permission to dump what I collect in the parking lot dumpster. All I need is to get the Polizei on my case for anonymous dumping.
- wear pants and long sleve shirt
- bring along trash tongs
- wear gloves
- bring a pair of waders/rubber boots

U.S. General Says It Is 'Fun to Shoot Some People'
Feb 3, 3:09 PM (ET)
By Will Dunham

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior U.S. Marine Corps general who said it was "fun to shoot some people" should have chosen his words more carefully but will not be disciplined, military officials said on Thursday.Lt. Gen. James Mattis, who led troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, made the comments at a conference Tuesday in San Diego.
"Actually it's quite fun to fight 'em, you know. It's a hell of a hoot. It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right up front with you, I like brawling," said Mattis.
"You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis said during a panel discussion. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."
In a statement, Gen. Michael Hagee, commander of the Marine Corps, praised Mattis as "one of this country's bravest and most experienced military leaders."
"While I understand that some people may take issue with the comments made by him, I also know he intended to reflect the unfortunate and harsh realities of war," Hagee said.
"I have counseled him concerning his remarks and he agrees he should have chosen his words more carefully," Hagee added.
Maj. Jason Johnston, a Marine spokesman at the Pentagon, said Hagee did not plan any disciplinary action against Mattis. Johnston declined to provide details of how Hagee had counseled Mattis, calling it a private matter.
At a Pentagon briefing on Thursday, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said he could not comment on the remarks, but Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, praised the general as having set a stellar example for troops in his service abroad.
Mattis is commander of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command at Quantico, Virginia, south of Washington.

In a totally bad ass move Councilmembers Eric Garcetti, Wendy Greuel and Jack Weiss introduced a motion today to divert millions of dollars spent on potentially unnecessary software expenditures into a fund dedicated to the long-sought-after expansion of Los Angeles' police force. Anyone with half a brain knows this is a good idea, unfortunatly it's been a long time since anyone with half a brain was making those decisions.

The fight over Social Security is, above all, about what kind of society we want to have. But it's also about numbers. And the numbers the privatizers use just don't add up.Let me inflict some of those numbers on you. Sorry, but this is important.
Schemes for Social Security privatization, like the one described in the 2004 Economic Report of the President, invariably assume that investing in stocks will yield a high annual rate of return, 6.5 or 7 percent after inflation, for at least the next 75 years. Without that assumption, these schemes can't deliver on their promises. Yet a rate of return that high is mathematically impossible unless the economy grows much faster than anyone is now expecting.

Worth looking at if you have an old pc you want to hang on to, curious about Linux, but have never used it, like the portability and no fuss-no muss of a LiveCD, and want some names to start googling. I'll stick with Knoppix. The article does mention a problem I had with SUSE's LiveCD. I had it hang looking for a printer as well. The biggest headache I found with nearly all LiveCD distros is the lack of drivers for older and/or cheaper hardware. I've also found that they don't support newer wifi cards using the Broadcom chipset (Linksys WMP11), even with linux-wlan-ng. It's been about 7 mo. since I fiddled with finding a driver, perhaps someone has written one by now.
