Transition

I've been working on migrating this blog to a new blogging platform using Wordpress. The initial install is at http://www.scupper.net/scratch . So because of this migration, and generaly being too busy, I've been neglectful of blogging, suffering from a mild case of blogger's guilt. I hope to make up for the absense using the new platform. I'm also moving to a virtual server account, that will allow me more flexibility in hosting different domains and sites.

Chow!

A cool gift, to yourself

I got my weekly Thinkgeek junk mail, and decided to peruse their catalog for new crap. Came across this really cool LCD/WiFI enabled picture frame.

ThinkGeek :: eStarling Wi-Fi Gmail / Flickr Enabled LCD Frame

It also allows you to display flickr photos via rss and send your mobile pics as well.

Firefox 1.5 has been released but......

The one and only "1.5 Out" thread - MozillaZine Forums

Well, it's here:1.5, but as usual, I'm a hostage to my extensions. I'll be watching the MozillaZine Firefox forums to see what users think of the new release, and see if some of the issues in RC3 were resolved. This thread's initial post has links to several articles. It's the thread to watch for most average users.

TMobile website bails on firefox support?

I went to check out my cell phone usage summary with tmobile, and low and behold, I discover that tmobile no longer supports firefox browsers. Not sure if this is just a web site update gone bad or what, but I've been using firefox regularly since June '04 for tmobile, and never had a problem. I didn't try the other tmobile subdomains, but it's just a big pain in the ass if they backpeddle and walk away from maintaining a cross-browser compliant web site. Funny thing is, is that their phones running Symbian use the Opera web browser. I wonder if their site is still rendering properly in Opera and the Symbian version of Opera?

Ah-nold terminates "phishing" in Calehfornia

California makes phishing punishable by law - Security - MSNBC.com
Schwarzenegger signs first of its kind bill
Updated: 1:15 a.m. ET Oct. 1, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill Friday making Internet "phishing" identity theft scams punishable by law.

The bill, advanced by state Sen. Kevin Murray, is the first of its kind in the United States and makes "phishing" — getting people to divulge personal information via e-mail by representing oneself as a business without the approval or authority of the business — a civil violation.

Victims may seek to recover actual damages or $500,000 for each violation, depending upon which is greater. Phishing often involves the use of names of legitimate banks, retailers and financial institutions to convince recipients of bogus e-mail offers to respond.

The Treo with Windows cometh, finally

When Verizon makes these available, sometime on October, I am on it.
I'll be able to VPN into my workstation, with encryption support native, from anywhere using Windows Mobile 5.0, instead of MobileTS or Palm VNC on a 600, which is sloooow.

Check it out: we got our hands on the new Windows Mobile-powered Treo, but it ain’t called the Treo 670 anymore (if it even ever was called that), it’s the Treo 700w (which implies—but doesn’t guarantee—the existence of a Palm-powered Treo 700p). We haven’t spent enough time with the 700w for a proper review — we’ve literally had it in our hands for only a few hours — but we couldn’t resist posting up this first look:

10:28 am PST: The war is over.

image courtesy of dvorak.orgWWDC Keynote excerpt (from MacNN):

Two major transitions for Mac: 68K to PowerPC. Next Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X. Now time for third transition. Transition to Intel-based Macs. Developers Now. Next year for users. "Because we want to make the best computers for our customers." No G5 PowerBook yet. Future products can't be build on IBM of PowerPC. Intel has performance and better performance per watt. Intel delivers much better performance per watt. Starting next year the first Macs with Intel processors. Shipping by next WWDC. Mostly complete by 2007 WWDC. Complete by the end of 2007. Two-year transition. [10:28 am]

I can't believe it, and yet it makes complete sense, especially considering the market shift from desktops to laptops and portables, and Apple's inability to get a faster, coler running G5 from either IBM or Freescale/Motorola. I'm still in a state of disbelief.

I finally got "dug" on Digg

I've been submitting links to tech articles and resources on digg, a reported alternative to slashdot crossed with del.icio.us, and finally got "noticed" by the gods of digg and got "dug" on a science link on string theory, so much so I made it to their front page.

As to being an alternative to /., I'm still on the fence, since I see a lot of cross pollenation from /. onto digg, as well as from del.icio.us, originally from /., to digg. Still a great example of folksonomy, and of course, another brick in the yellow brick road towards the semantic web.

Eric Garcetti on Open source for LA: "For taxpayers, this is a no-brainer,"

blogging.la

Got a heads up about this from the LUGOD "Vox" general list. If LA does go open source, it could be a watershed moment for cities and counties across CA. And to think, they're considering it as a savings effort to put more cops on the street. I cracked up at how it was characterized by the poster below:

LA should go Open Source
February 02, 2005
http://blogging.la/archives/2005/02/la_should_go_op.phtml

In a totally bad ass move Councilmembers Eric Garcetti, Wendy Greuel and Jack Weiss introduced a motion today to divert millions of dollars spent on potentially unnecessary software expenditures into a fund dedicated to the long-sought-after expansion of Los Angeles' police force. Anyone with half a brain knows this is a good idea, unfortunatly it's been a long time since anyone with half a brain was making those decisions.

Google introduces video search service
Wednesday January 26, 2005 (11:30 PM GMT)

Anonymous Reader writes "Search giant Google announced its Google Video (Beta) search service to users earlier today. Now users can use video.google.com to search for transcripts and screenshots of a particular show and find the information in a simplistic format. Users will have the ability to search using a keyword or a key phrase, which will fetch the relevant search results. Currently, Google’s database includes thousands of popular shows, but it isn’t that massive, since Google started indexing the shows starting December 2004."

Newsforge Story source:Cool Zone Tech

At first glance this service looks kind of useful, but I wonder where it's headed (porno search???). Like we really need that.

Here's the url:

http://video.google.com/
About Google Video

For now, they only index KGO, KRON, PBS, C-SPAN, KQED, KNTV, Fox News, C-SPAN2 video and provide stills from the video.

Here are some screen shots provided by Google Labs about the Video search service:

Mapping Birds - NBII Bird Conservation
Friday, 21 January 2005

http://mbirdims.fws.gov/nbii/

Interactive map from the NBII Bird Conservation Node features Bird Surveys, Conservation Units (Regions), Physical and Vegetation data, and political units. This site is made available through partnership between the US Fish and Wildlife Service and USGS's National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII).

This application was developed to facilitate informed querying of certain bird monitoring databases accessible through the NBII Bird Conservation Node as well as to display the results of geospatial queries of these databases that are of general public interest. The capabilities of this site are intended to be of use to professional wildlife biologists and conservation planners as well as to the general public.

This application enables the user to interactively view various elements of select bird population survey designs (e.g., strata boundaries, transects, segments, routes, zones). The user can display these design elements over a backdrop of political boundaries, NABCI Bird Conservation Regions, landcover, hydrology, and/or elevation.

Using these views, the user should be better able to define efficient queries of the bird population databases and retrieve data relevant to their interests. Additionally, certain queries of the population and geospatial databases that are of general interest to the public are also enabled by this application.

Examples of query output that can be generated using this application include: a) maps of estimated population abundance within survey units, b) maps of percent change in estimated population abundance within survey units between user selected years, c) maps of active survey routes, and d) maps of species relative abundance. More information on individual databases may be found by selecting that particular database through the "Retrieve Bird Data" button in the application.
